Monteverde is a place where nature thrives, and ecotourism plays a vital role in keeping it that way.
Ecotourism involves traveling to observe plants, animals, and stunning natural habitats, and it’s closely intertwined with sustainable tourism, a form of travel that focuses on minimizing environmental impact, supporting conservation efforts, and benefiting local communities.
Though non-sustainable ecotourism does exist, providers of ecotourism have increasingly focused on delivering such experiences sustainably, by encouraging responsible exploration and ensuring that tourism helps protect, rather than exploit, the natural world.
With its misty cloud forests, extraordinary biodiversity, and breathtaking landscapes, Monteverde has long been a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers, as well as a hotbed of innovation for sustainable tourism.
It’s because of such efforts towards sustainable tourism that visitors can experience the magic of Monteverde, and at the same time, contribute to its conservation. This responsible travel protects the environment and enriches the experience — allowing current visitors and future generations to explore and appreciate Monteverde’s incredible natural beauty for the years to come.
Ocotea Tours was founded on the belief that exceptional experiences and environmental responsibility should go hand in hand. For over 17 years, our guides have remained steadfast in their commitment to sustainable tourism, ensuring each of our experiences are immersive, educational, and respectful of Monteverde’s fragile ecosystem.
These highly trained guides do more than simply lead tours—they act as stewards of the environment, educating visitors on the importance of conservation while offering an unparalleled depth of knowledge about the region’s flora, fauna, and history.
Whether guiding birdwatchers through Monteverde’s misty trails or leading nighttime explorers in search of elusive nocturnal wildlife, these guides craft each journey with care and attention to detail, adhering to the philosophy of "take only memories, leave only footprints.”
Costa Rica is a global leader in sustainability, and Monteverde is no exception. Many businesses in the region strive to meet the country’s rigorous environmental standards, earning certifications that signify their dedication to responsible tourism.
Ocotea Tours is proud to hold sustainability certifications that recognize their efforts in conservation, community support, and eco-friendly operations.
Some of the most notable sustainability certifications in Costa Rica include:
Each certification represents a deep commitment to preserving Monteverde’s ecosystems while fostering economic benefits for local communities. By choosing a certified tour operator like Ocotea Tours, visitors can be confident that their experience aligns with ethical and sustainable tourism practices.
Ocotea Tours is a proud holder of CST Certification, but sustainability isn’t just a certification—it’s an ongoing commitment to protecting the environment, even when it means making difficult choices.
Our team works with local reserves to continuously adapt our operations and minimize ecological disruption, sometimes limiting access to sensitive areas during critical periods of plant growth, bird nesting, or amphibian breeding seasons.
For instance, certain trails may be temporarily closed or rerouted to prevent disturbances to rare or endangered species, such as the resplendent quetzal, which relies on Monteverde’s pristine cloud forests for survival.
In doing so, we place the well-being of the environment above short-term tourism gains, ensuring that Monteverde remains a thriving ecosystem for years to come.
Sustainability efforts extend beyond the trails, too. Ocotea Tours actively supports local conservation initiatives, collaborates with community-led environmental programs, and educates visitors on ways they can contribute to the region’s protection.
By fostering a culture of respect and responsibility, we hope to continue to inspire both locals and tourists to be active participants in preserving Monteverde’s natural wonders.
Monteverde’s cloud forests are home to an astonishing array of biodiversity, including species that are endangered or under threat due to habitat loss, climate change, and human activity. Preserving these species is crucial to maintaining the balance of the ecosystem, as each plays a unique role in the intricate web of life.
One of the most iconic species in Monteverde, the resplendent quetzal is a striking bird known for its iridescent green plumage and long tail feathers. This species is highly dependent on mature cloud forests, as it nests in hollowed-out trees and relies on wild avocado trees for food.
The quetzal is considered near threatened due to deforestation and habitat fragmentation. If quetzals were to disappear, it would disrupt seed dispersal for cloud forest trees, impacting plant regeneration and altering the forest composition over time.
This unique bird, known for its metallic, bell-like call, is classified as vulnerable due to habitat destruction. The three-wattled bellbird migrates between lower and higher elevations, playing a critical role in seed dispersal.
The loss of this species could reduce plant diversity, as many tree species depend on birds like the bellbird to spread their seeds throughout the forest.
Once more common in Monteverde, jaguar populations have drastically declined due to habitat loss and poaching. Jaguars are near threatened and serve as apex predators, maintaining the health of prey populations such as deer and peccaries. Without jaguars, the unchecked growth of these prey species could lead to overgrazing and degradation of the ecosystem.
Once endemic to Monteverde, the golden toad is now considered extinct, largely due to climate change and disease (chytridiomycosis). This amphibian’s disappearance serves as a stark reminder of how sensitive cloud forest species are to environmental shifts, especially amphibians, who are some of the first to be harmed by pollutants in the air, soil, or water.
Amphibians play a key role in insect population control and serve as an important food source for larger predators, and their decline can create cascading effects throughout the ecosystem.
It is estimated that Monteverde has the highest orchid diversity in the world, with over 500 species recorded. Many are endangered due to climate fluctuations and habitat destruction. Orchids, along with other epiphytes (plants that grow on trees), play a vital role in cloud forest ecosystems by capturing moisture and providing microhabitats for insects, amphibians, and small mammals.
Each species in Monteverde’s cloud forest is interconnected, forming a delicate balance that ensures the survival of the entire ecosystem. The loss of a single species, whether it be a top predator like the jaguar or a keystone pollinator like the quetzal, can have widespread consequences.
Conservation efforts—such as habitat protection, responsible tourism, and sustainable land use—are essential in safeguarding Monteverde’s extraordinary biodiversity for future generations.
In Costa Rica, sustainability isn’t a trend - it’s how Costa Ricans live. The country embraces the philosophy that nature, people, and tourism must coexist in harmony. Monteverde exemplifies this mindset, with local businesses, guides, and conservationists working together to safeguard its forests, wildlife, and cultural heritage.
Ocotea Tours is proud to be part of this legacy, offering guests more than just a hike through the cloud forest — an opportunity to engage with the environment in a meaningful and responsible way. By choosing Ocotea Tours and other certified tour providers, visitors contribute to a model of tourism that prioritizes conservation, education, and community well-being.
Monteverde is a place of wonder, and with thoughtful, sustainable travel, it will remain that way for generations to come. Book your tour today and be part of Monteverde’s conservation story!
