Protecting Monteverde’s Rare and Endangered Species

Monteverde’s cloud forests are home to an astonishing array of biodiversity, including species that are endangered or under threat due to habitat loss, climate change, and human activity. Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno)

One of the most iconic species in Monteverde, the resplendent quetzal is a striking bird known for its iridescent green plumage and long tail feathers. This species is highly dependent on mature cloud forests, as it nests in hollowed-out trees and relies on wild avocado trees for food. 

The quetzal is considered near threatened due to deforestation and habitat fragmentation. If quetzals were to disappear, it would disrupt seed dispersal for cloud forest trees, impacting plant regeneration and altering the forest composition over time.

Three-Wattled Bellbird (Procnias tricarunculatus)

This unique bird, known for its metallic, bell-like call, is classified as vulnerable due to habitat destruction. The three-wattled bellbird migrates between lower and higher elevations, playing a critical role in seed dispersal. 

The loss of this species could reduce plant diversity, as many tree species depend on birds like the bellbird to spread their seeds throughout the forest.

Jaguar (Panthera onca)

Once more common in Monteverde, jaguar populations have drastically declined due to habitat loss and poaching. Jaguars are near threatened and serve as apex predators, maintaining the health of prey populations such as deer and peccaries. Without jaguars, the unchecked growth of these prey species could lead to overgrazing and degradation of the ecosystem.

Golden Toad (Incilius periglenes) – Extinct?

Once endemic to Monteverde, the golden toad is now considered extinct, largely due to climate change and disease (chytridiomycosis). This amphibian’s disappearance serves as a stark reminder of how sensitive cloud forest species are to environmental shifts, especially amphibians, who are some of the first to be harmed by pollutants in the air, soil, or water.

Amphibians play a key role in insect population control and serve as an important food source for larger predators, and their decline can create cascading effects throughout the ecosystem.

Orchids and Epiphytes

It is estimated that Monteverde has the highest orchid diversity in the world, with over 500 species recorded. Many are endangered due to climate fluctuations and habitat destruction. Orchids, along with other epiphytes (plants that grow on trees), play a vital role in cloud forest ecosystems by capturing moisture and providing microhabitats for insects, amphibians, and small mammals.
